A Letter from the City Council of Freetown

CITY COUNCIL OF FREETOWN
Wallace Johnson Street
FREETOWN
Republic of Sierra Leone
7th November 1996
OUR REF: CM/FR/1

As Chairman of the Committee of Management, Freetown City Council, I want to stress the potential of WSP and the promise it holds for the citizens of the world. In my particular situation, in a city that has been feeling the brunt of the ravages of a five-year rebel war, WSP can help heal our women so that they will become whole again. WSP can also sensitize them to realize the important role they can and have to play in building up their communities and their country.

I believe the salvation of any community or nation lies in the hands of its womenfolk. Therefore, positive steps should be taken throughout the country and in every community to recognize its womenfolk, empower it and give it a share in decision-making positions.

The women in Sierra Leone are aware of the parlous situation they are in. They realize that they must do something to alleviate and eradicate poverty. They are clamouring for education, health, safe water, sanitation, housing, jobs, and all that it takes to enjoy a decent life in acceptable living conditions.

The women in Africa want to be liberated so that they can hold their heads high up among their fellow citizens of the world.

I call on the citizens of the world to heed the cries and pleas of their sisters in Africa and access help in every form necessary so that in the not-too-distant future they will be able to stand on their own two feet and be self-reliant. Unless this happens, they will always be dependent on the rest of the world. And there will be no true peace, security, and development all over the world.

I hope and pray that as Infosets spread all over Africa, we shall achieve true development of all our people, with women in the forefront.

Miss Florence Dilsworth
Chairman, Committee of Management
